1. Polishing powder material

Polishing powder is usually composed of cerium oxide, alumina, silicon oxide, iron oxide, zirconium oxide, chromium oxide and other components, the hardness of different materials is different, the chemical properties in water are different, so the use of occasions are not the same. Alumina and chromium oxide have mohs hardness of 9, cerium oxide and zirconium oxide are 7, and iron oxide is even lower. Cerium oxide and silicate glass have high chemical activity and hardness, so they are widely used in glass polishing.

In order to increase the polishing speed of cerium oxide, fluorine is usually added to the cerium oxide polishing powder to increase the grinding rate. The mixed rare earth polishing powder with low cerium content is usually mixed with 3-8 fluorine. Pure cerium oxide polishing powder is usually not fluorinated.


For the glass of ZF or F series, because itself hardness is lesser, and the fluorine content of material itself is higher, because this is chosen, the polishing powder that does not contain fluorine is better.


2. Particle size of cerium oxide


The larger the grain size of cerium oxide, the greater the grinding force, the more suitable for harder materials, ZF glass should be used to fine polishing powder. It should be noted that the particle size of all cerium oxide has a distribution problem. The average particle size or median diameter D50 only determines the speed of polishing, while the maximum particle size Dmax determines the precision of polishing. Therefore, the maximum particle size of polishing powder must be controlled to achieve the high precision requirement.

3. Hardness of polishing powder

The true hardness of polishing powder is related to materials, such as the hardness of cerium oxide is about 7 Mohs hardness, all kinds of cerium oxide are not much. But different cerium oxide body gives the impression of hardness is different, because cerium oxide polishing powder is usually aggregate. Of course, the harder material such as alumina is added in some polishing powder, the grinding rate that shows and wear resistance can rise.

4. Concentration of polishing slurry

The concentration of slurry in the polishing process determines the polishing speed, and the higher the concentration, the higher the polishing speed. When using small particle polishing powder, the slurry concentration is appropriately reduced.
